The WriteBeyond Program

Writing as deftly as P.G Wodehouse seldom comes from innate talent. Yes, penmanship is a skill that can be slogged upon, acquired and perfected.

At ALMA, we believe everyone deserves a shot at it. WriteBeyond is a 6-week professional module for writing and editing to take an already-skilled young writer to global industry levels, and beyond.

Overview

Overview

This programme is unique: it is based on a pedagogy that has a sharp focus on writing as practice and craft, but in a practical and experiential work environment. Rigorous training in the processes of writing and editing will accompany one-on-one guidance from the Senior Editors and mentors of the magazine, and involve rewriting and studying real submissions across fiction, humour, commentary, poetry and more.

Our curriculum has been developed to provide an exhaustive dive into the nitty-gritties of wielding the written word. The objective is simple: to play on your strengths as a writer or editor and help you find your distinctive voice. This is a competitive and exclusive programme, and we only select 5 applicants for each six-week session.

What’s special about WriteBeyond is its ability to give you on-ground experience of working at a living, breathing literary magazine. ALMA MAGAZINE is distinctive in its diversity of genres and writing styles. For those of you who wonder how exactly all that comes together, this is a singular opportunity to work alongside a diverse team of editors, artists, designers and writers.

Testimonials

WriteBeyond has pushed me to expand my skill set with regard to poetry, something I thought couldn't be taught. The curriculum gave me enough room to be creative while staying true to my style. Interacting with the teamand learning different skills from various departments was one of the things I enjoyed most. It has been a phenomenal learning experience that I wouldn't otherwise have had in my life.

2. Why WriteBeyond?

3. Why don’t I opt for Masterclass Writing instead?

We don’t believe in pre-set content or generalising a skill as nuanced as writing.
